Coney Island: Rough Around the Edges

Outside of the Coney Island kitsch is Coney Island decay. Maybe decay is the wrong word. Blight? That’s not really it. Gritty? No, it’s the sense that the buildings and the store fronts have seen better days. It’s not a pretty neighborhood. It’s not really ugly either. It just is. But, that’s also what makes it kind of special. Maybe I didn’t fall in love with Coney Island. But, maybe I didn’t hate it either. It’s another neighborhood that helps to make up the fabric of New York City–with or without its kitsch and decline.
